Dr. Ruth Ben-Ghiat is professor of history and Italian studies at New York University. She is the author of Strongmen: Mussolini to the Present. She exposes the blueprint of leaders from Mussolini to Trump. She points out that as of 2022, half of the world’s population lives under the illiberal rule, including countries such as Poland, Hungary, India, China, and Russia.

Alpha males lead all of these countries. Republicans have two alpha males, each living in Flordia and expressing their ideas in Fascist style. DeSantis is trying to outdo Donald Trump and so portends that Republicans will only support extremist ideology. Ben-Ghiat’s protagonists include 17 authoritarian leaders, some dead, but many are walking on the earth as corrupt, brutal, sexist, delusional, and violent.

I subscribe to her newsletter, Lucid and I want to share it with you. She describes Lucid as a newsletter for big-picture thinking about autocracy and threats to democracy worldwide.

In today’s edition of Lucid, she talks about DeSantis’s fascist-style macho joining Donald Trump as our twin macho Republican politicians. They are autocrats.

She starts with these comments by our protagonists:

“I will win and I will serve two terms,” Florida Governor and GOP presidential contender Ron DeSantis declared in June, indicating his intention to bring about long-lasting change in America. “Why does he need eight years? Why should we wait eight years?” responded his rival for the nomination, former president Donald Trump. “I will get everything done in six months.” Coming from an individual who staged a violent coup to stay in power illegally, this allusion to a Blitzkrieg of executive orders upon his return to the White House is alarming.

President Biden and His Predecessor in Georgia

President Biden and His Predecessor in Georgia

On Saturday, March 9th, Joe Biden and his predecessor visited Georgia a few days before the March 12 primary. In Georgia, the media appears to treat President Biden and his predecessor as equals in the 2024 presidential race. But they are not—not by a long shot. The media is replicating how they covered the 2020 presidential race. This is a failure of the free press to discern the real difference between the Republican candidate and the Democratic candidate, who happens to be President of the United States. The Republican candidate sought to stay in office in 2020 by staging a coup on January 6th, 2021. He lost the election by 7 million votes and still to this day, claims the Big Lie that the other side stole the election from him. Millions of Americans believe this, also. This is the underlying context that the press forgets to mention. The predecessor spent for years while sitting in the White House chipping away at the guard rails of democracy. Thankfully he was an under achieving autocrat.

AGEISM

AGEISM

This post is about ageism and how we discriminate against people that are considered old. We need to look at the media and ask why they are making the case that Biden is not fit for office based on his age. Most of the people in the media, those that are writing the stories and reporting on various outlets, are much younger than either Trump or Biden. Could they be involved in a case of bias, discrimination, or bullying on the basis of age? This very well could be the case. Researchers call this ageism, patterned after sexism and racism.
