Georgia’s Election Cast of Characters

Written by Jack Hassard

Georgia has a cast of character’s whose names appear on the 2022 election ballot. I don’t know where to start with these characters. Instead, I’ll start with attempting to vote last week.

Yesterday, my wife and I went to vote where we have for more than 20 years. When we pulled into the parking lot on Whitlock Avenue, one mile west of Marietta Square, we were pleased to see no people in line. We asked a woman coming out of the building if we could vote inside the building. She told us that this location is no longer used for voting. We’d have to go across town to another location. We did successfully the next day. But was this the result of the new Georgia election laws passed by Republicans in 2021

Effect of Georgia Election Laws

The Georgia Election Integrity project identified at least three ways that the election laws in Georgia affect voters.

  • Anyone, without evidence, can challenge an unlimited number of voters from voting. This has been widespread, including the county where I live (Cobb). In an AJC article, it was reported that 65,000 voter were already challenged.
  • Citizens can be criminalized for giving water or food while people are waiting in line. It doesn’t matter where the water comes from, neighbors, churches or friends.
  • The laws have made it harder for people to vote. Instead of driving 4 miles to vote, I had to drive 15 miles to vote. What if I didn’t have car, or there wasn’t public transportation to get me there (there isn’t). Also, ballot drop boxes are no longer available 24/7. They are locked up inside official election sites.

There are seven people on the Georgia 2022 ballot that are listed in Table 1. These seven republicans are notable for their positions on abortion, health care, voting integrity, the Big Lie, conspiracy theories, and democracy. People in other states have written to me to ask how some of these people could be on the ballot. Well they are.

Table 1 is a list of seven running for office in Georgia for state and federal positions. I’ve checked media sources to back up the “notable achievements” of each candidate.

President Biden and His Predecessor in Georgia

On Saturday, March 9th, Joe Biden and his predecessor visited Georgia a few days before the March 12 primary. In Georgia, the media appears to treat President Biden and his predecessor as equals in the 2024 presidential race. But they are not—not by a long shot. The media is replicating how they covered the 2020 presidential race. This is a failure of the free press to discern the real difference between the Republican candidate and the Democratic candidate, who happens to be President of the United States. The Republican candidate sought to stay in office in 2020 by staging a coup on January 6th, 2021. He lost the election by 7 million votes and still to this day, claims the Big Lie that the other side stole the election from him. Millions of Americans believe this, also. This is the underlying context that the press forgets to mention. The predecessor spent for years while sitting in the White House chipping away at the guard rails of democracy. Thankfully he was an under achieving autocrat.

AGEISM

This post is about ageism and how we discriminate against people that are considered old. We need to look at the media and ask why they are making the case that Biden is not fit for office based on his age. Most of the people in the media, those that are writing the stories and reporting on various outlets, are much younger than either Trump or Biden. Could they be involved in a case of bias, discrimination, or bullying on the basis of age? This very well could be the case. Researchers call this ageism, patterned after sexism and racism.
