“It’s the most hated bill passed by the Senate in the U.S. since the 1990s.\
The United States Senate passed a toxic bill in the U.S. Senate by a tie-breaking vote. The rich would benefit, and the rest of us would suffer. But perhaps more crucially is that many of the MAGA cult that voted for the felon will suffer immeasurably. The bill is also the most hated legislation since the 1990s. The Economic Times reports that the Trump bill got brutal reviews from Americans. A few days later, House Republicans, minus two, voted for the Trump bill. It was signed on July 4th. Insidious is to say the least about this bill.
Let’s look at the toxicity that Congress voted for and that Trump signed.
Toxicity Elements
Deep Medicaid Cuts
Over $1?trillion in cuts to Medicaid and SNAP via tighter eligibility, work requirements, provider?tax reductions, household co?pays, and carve-outs for immigrant coverage. Republicans are directly going after millions of Americans. Medicaid recipients, especially low-income families and single parents, bear new work and financial burdens via stricter requirements and co-pays. Many of these folks voted for Trump. Rural hospitals will be decimated.
SNAP (Food Stamps) was passed off to the states
The Republicans in the Senate and House will directly harm families and kids. And they don’t care. States would absorb 5% of benefit costs and 75% of administrative costs, plus penalties for states with over 6% error rates. Tightened state budgets may reduce access to essential food assistance for low-income families.
Ban on Gender-Affirming Care under Medicaid/Obamacare)
Federal prohibition on Medicaid covering gender-affirming treatments. LGBTQ+ individuals lose access to critical, often life-affirming healthcare.
Artificial Intelligence Regulatory Freeze
A nationwide 10-year ban prevents states from passing AI safety regulations. This will weaken local oversight, raising public safety and privacy concerns.
Defunding Planned Parenthood
The bill ends federal funding for Planned Parenthood. This will limit affordable reproductive health services—counseling, cancer screening, contraception—for low-income women.
Tax Breaks for the Wealthy
- Extension of 2017 Trump tax cuts, SALT cap increase (up to $40k for certain earners), and more corporate tax breaks.
- Net effect: Top 10% households gain ~$12k/year, while bottom 10% lose ~$1.6k/year .
Who are the Americans that will suffer
- Low-Income Families & Individuals: Many would lose Medicaid, SNAP, and gender?affirming care.
- Rural Communities & Hospitals: They face funding cliffs, potential closures, and eroding access to care.
- LGBTQ+ Populations: Particularly trans individuals lose supportive medical coverage. Inhumane.
- State Governments: Confront increased fiscal burden, potential austerity.
- Taxpayers Nationwide: Face $2.4–2.8?trillion additional deficit climb over the next decade.
Who Benefits
This is a disgusting bill. Here we see who benefits, and which departments benefit.
- High-Income Individuals & Wealthy Households: Major tax cuts and higher SALT deduction caps.
- Corporations: Retain favorable tax breaks. Many of the
- Defense, Border, and Immigration Agencies: Receive billions. This is outrageous, especially given the cuts already made by Musk’s thieves.
- Nuclear Radiation Victims (“Downwinders”): Would gain expanded RECA compensation, though this is one of the few direct aid measures benefiting individuals. This is long overdue, and you can read about it here.
I’ll be writing more about this bill in different contexts, and how the bill needs to be opposed by Americans.
