The Radical Right’s Trojan Horse

Last night Ed Johnson suggested I listen to a podcast, Jennifer Berkshire interview Nancy MacLean, on the subject “The Long Crusade against Public Schools.”  I did, and thus is post.  You can click on the graphic and listen to it yourself.  It’s well worth 30 minutes of your time.

Why should you listen?

Nancy MacLean is the author of Democracy in Chains:  The Deep History of the Radical Right’s Stealth Plan for America (Library Copy), which was published in June, 2017.  Her central thesis is that America is under attack from an underground, and stealth group who found in the work of James Buchanan, an economist, and professor at the University of Virginia the ideas to propel the radical right onto its course of undermining democracy.

She networks James Buchanan to the formation of many right leaning think tanks such as the Cato Institute, the Heritage Foundation, Citizens for a Sound Economy, Americans for Prosperity, FreedomWorks, the Club for Growth, the State Policy Network, the Competitive Enterprise Institute, the Tax Foundation, the Reason Foundation, the Leadership Institute, and more.   Networked in this is the major funding source of much of the right’s movement, and is Charles and David Koch, the enablers of “dark” money further undermining democracy.

Add to this network, the American Legislative Exchange Council (ALEC), a swamp of an organization that “writes” model legislation that is passed out to state legislators as formal (annual meetings) and informal meetings.  These model “laws” are replicated and then co-sponsored by Republican legislators in their respective states.  It’s kind of a fill in the blank way to write laws, but its influenced state legislatures for years by passing laws that thwart progressive ideas by replacing them restrictive actions favoring business and industry to the peril of local and state citizens.

It’s an important book to explore and share its insights.  The author writes:

this is the true origin story of today’s well-heeled radical right, told through the intellectual arguments, goals, and actions of the man without whom this movement would represent yet another dead-end fantasy of the far right, incapable of doing serious damage to American society. Stephen Miller: A Trump Pick You May Not Know About

Stephen Miller: A Trump Pick You May Not Know About

Donald Trump has started selecting people to be part of his administration. The first batch included Tulsi Gabbard, Pete Hegseth, Matt Gaetz, and Robert Kennedy. Some folks consider them deplorable.

Yet, one of the first picks was Stephen Miller. Do you know who he is?  Or what position he’ll have in the Trump administration?  He won’t hold a cabinet spot. But he will have an office in the White House. He’ll keep his position from 2017 to 2021 as deputy chief of staff for policy.

Miller has been and will continue as one of Trump’s most influential advisors. He’s been in Trump’s orbit for nearly a decade. Miller crafted Trump’s rally speeches and designed immigration policies that banned Muslims and separated families. He will be at the center of the threat to deport millions of undocumented immigrants. The danger to American immigrant families is real. Trump is determined to carry out his threat. Stephen Miller will lead this dehumanizing and cruel assault on people.  Indeed, people like most of us. We are all descendants of immigrants who came to America for a better life. Miller is a descendant of a Jewish family that escaped from Russia in 1903.

The Leader of The New Democrats

The Leader of The New Democrats

In this post, I summarize the powerful messages and commitments from Kamala Harris’s speech at the Democratic National Convention. I also emphasize that she is one of the leaders of The New Democrats who promise unity, justice for all, an opportunity economy, reproductive freedom, border security with a path to citizenship, and collaborative international relations.

The Last Days of Trump

Explore the final chapter of Trump’s political saga and the rise of Kamala Harris. Trump’s end came when he supported the insurrection on January 6, 2021. His record as president was dismal, and my book The Trump Files: An Account of the Trump Administration’s Effect on American Democracy, Human Rights, Science, and Public Health describes it in detail.

One reviewer said that The Trump Files’ accounting is wide-ranging, sharp-elbowed, and deeply committed to democracy and equality. With sharp, clear-eyed prose he takes on racial injustice, the Trumpist worldview (in a discussion inspired by the work of George Lakoff), how “the United States drifted toward authoritarian and autocratic rule,” and most thoroughly how “science in the Trump era was diminished at the peril of the health and well-being for not only people and other living things, but Earth itself.”
