Power Shift in DC: And in the States

Written by Jack Hassard

On November 12, 2018

On November 6, the power shifted in the House of Representatives with the Democrats taking back that body leading currently 227 to 198.

Some elections have not been decided.  For example, here in Georgia, Democrat Carolyn Bourdeaux is only 900 votes shy of winning the 7th Congressional District, a district that has been Red for years.  There are still ballots out there, and her campaign is insisting that every vote count.  In an adjacent 6th Congressional District, Lucy McBath defeated incumbent Karen Handel, turning the Red district Blue.

And in the Governor’s race in Georgia, Stacey Abrams is fighting to get every ballot counted in her race with Brian Kemp.  Kemp, who stayed in his position as Secretary of State during the election and afterwards (he finally resigned two days ago), is personally responsible for disabling many voters in Georgia from either casting ballots, or having their ballot counted.

But at the national level, the shift in power is massive.  There are 21 congressional committees, 20 standing committees and one select committee.  Each of these 42 committees will be lead by a Democratic Representative, replacing the 42 Republicans who have held those positions for the past two years, as well as six years during the Obama years.

For example, the House Intelligence committee (Permanent Select) has been headed by Devin Nunes (R-CA), a man that has pushed the idea that Trump and his associates did nothing wrong during the 2016 Presidential election.  Well, he will be demoted, and Adam Schiff (D-CA) will take over, and has promised consequences for the actions of Trump, et.al.  The Intelligence Committee oversees the CIA, Department of Defense, Emerging Threats, and NSA and Cybersecurity.  Democrats will head all these committees.

This is just the beginning.

Trump and his cronies have laid waste to natural resources (there are five committees here), science, space and technology (five more committees), Ways and Means (there are six committees here, including health, human resources, oversight, social security, tax policy and trade).

For the past two years, the Federal Government has been led by a group of politicians who hid in every nook and cranny in DC.  That’s coming to and end.  There are consequences to the lying, and corrupt behavior of the administration.  As Daniel Drezner says, at the Washington Post, Trump is acting less like a toddler and more like a liar. Almost everything he says is not true.  He’s going to called out, more and more in the months ahead.

Stephen Miller: A Trump Pick You May Not Know About

Donald Trump has started selecting people to be part of his administration. The first batch included Tulsi Gabbard, Pete Hegseth, Matt Gaetz, and Robert Kennedy. Some folks consider them deplorable.

Yet, one of the first picks was Stephen Miller. Do you know who he is?  Or what position he’ll have in the Trump administration?  He won’t hold a cabinet spot. But he will have an office in the White House. He’ll keep his position from 2017 to 2021 as deputy chief of staff for policy.

Miller has been and will continue as one of Trump’s most influential advisors. He’s been in Trump’s orbit for nearly a decade. Miller crafted Trump’s rally speeches and designed immigration policies that banned Muslims and separated families. He will be at the center of the threat to deport millions of undocumented immigrants. The danger to American immigrant families is real. Trump is determined to carry out his threat. Stephen Miller will lead this dehumanizing and cruel assault on people.  Indeed, people like most of us. We are all descendants of immigrants who came to America for a better life. Miller is a descendant of a Jewish family that escaped from Russia in 1903.

The Last Days of Trump

The Last Days of Trump

Explore the final chapter of Trump’s political saga and the rise of Kamala Harris. Trump’s end came when he supported the insurrection on January 6, 2021. His record as president was dismal, and my book The Trump Files: An Account of the Trump Administration’s Effect on American Democracy, Human Rights, Science, and Public Health describes it in detail.

One reviewer said that The Trump Files’ accounting is wide-ranging, sharp-elbowed, and deeply committed to democracy and equality. With sharp, clear-eyed prose he takes on racial injustice, the Trumpist worldview (in a discussion inspired by the work of George Lakoff), how “the United States drifted toward authoritarian and autocratic rule,” and most thoroughly how “science in the Trump era was diminished at the peril of the health and well-being for not only people and other living things, but Earth itself.”
