Pandemic Grief

Last year I wrote a post entitled Climate Grief. We don’t talk about climate grief. It’s nearly impossible not to experience climate grief. Finally, the nation will deal with pandemic grief.

In less than a year, there have been more than 24 million cases of COVID-19 and in excess of 400,000 deaths from COVID-19 in the United States. World wide there have been more than 96 million cases, and 2 million deaths.

At the reflecting pool at the National Mall, President-elect Joe Biden and Vice-President-elect Kamala Harris paid tribute to those who lost their lives to the coronavirus. With very few words but with powerful images, he led the nation in grieving the loss of so many people.

Uncovering the Origin of COVID-19

The origin of COVID-19 has been a fundamental question: Was it from nature or a lab? In this post, I’ll be able to shed light on this question. A few days ago, Florence Debarre, a French evolutionary biologist, identified previously undisclosed genetic data from the Wuhan Seafood Market. Her discovery was shared immediately with Kristen Andersen, an evolutionary biologist at Scripps Research, who co-published one of the first research papers on the origin of COVID-19 in 2020. Together they believe these new findings support a natural source of the virus rather than from a lab.

Covid Came Calling

Covid Came Calling

The first case of COVID-19 happened somewhere in China in the Fall of 2019. Covid came calling at a friend’s home sometime before October 27, 2022. This was the first time that they were infected with COVID-19. Their symptoms have been mild, including slight cough. I’ll track their progress and update this post with new data.

Who Is Getting Infected with COVID-19?

COVID-19 is not behind us. Omicron is a reminder that COVID-19 is not only spreading faster than Delta, but that this virus is another mutation as it continues to infect populations around the world. More than 300,000 people a day in the US are getting infected. In fact, the Omicron variant has overtaken Delta in the number of infections each day in most of the world.
