Juneteenth in Marietta was celebrated from June 16 – 18 in Marietta Square. My wife and I went to a “cultural fest” on Saturday. More than 100 booths included people selling food, art, crafts, and other handcrafted items.
There were other booths that were as interesting as the artistic booths. One of the booths I visited was entitled the “Before Slavery Museum. I learned that Cobb County would be location of the museum sometime in 2023.
Juneteenth is now a national holiday when Joe Biden signed the Juneteenth National Independence Day Act into law in 2021. The link takes you to a NY Times article by Derrick Bryson Taylor that tracks the history of the Juneteenth Holiday. As Taylor points out in his article Juneteenth began on June 19, 1865, when Union General Gordon Granger arrived in Galveston, Texas, to inform enslaved African Americans of their freedom and that the Civil War had ended.
Here are a few photos of Marietta Square’s “cultural fest.”
