Four Young Climate Activists Testified in Congress Today: Don’t Make it Their Last Stand!

Today, at a U.S. House Foreign Affairs Committee Hearing, the four climate change activists shown here testified at the meeting. They are as follows:

  • Vic Barrett, 20 years old, fellow with the Alliance for Climate Education
  • Benji Backer, 21 years old, president of American Conservation Coalition
  • Greta Thunberg, 16 years old, Sweden, Founder of Friday Strike
  • Jamie Margolin, 17 years old, Seattle, Founder of This is Zero Hour

They testified before Republican and Democratic House members, and used their time to tell their truth about the climate crisis.  They made it very clear that they are concerned that enough is not being done to reduce carbon emissions.  Without curbing carbon emissions, the temperature of the atmosphere and the oceans will continue to rise.

I’ve copied the section of the nearly two hour committee hearing featuring each of their testimonies.  Their testimony is approximately 20 minutes.

There are two videos below.  The one on the left is the full two hour testimony, which includes opening remarks by some of the House Members, the testimony of the four students, followed by a question and answer session. The video on the right is the 20 minute testimony of the four students.

We must join with them. Don’t make this their last stand.

Ocean heat is off the charts-Here’s what that means for humans and ecosystems around the world

Ocean temperatures have been off the charts since mid-March 2023, with the highest average levels in 40 years of satellite monitoring, and the impact is breaking through in disruptive ways around the world.

The sea of Japan is more than 7 degrees Fahrenheit (4 degrees Celsius) warmer than average. The Indian monsoon, closely tied to conditions in the warm Indian Ocean, has been well below its expected strength.

Spain, France, England and the whole Scandinavian Peninsula are also seeing rainfall far below normal, likely connected to an extraordinary marine heat wave in the eastern North Atlantic. Sea surface temperatures there have been 1.8 to 5 F (1 to 3 C) above average from the coast of Africa all the way to Iceland.

So, what’s going on?

Climate Change is a Menace by the Numbers

Climate change is an existential threat. If we don’t reduce and eventually eliminate our reliance on burning fossil fuels, global warming will continue and bring havoc to the planet earth. The United Nations climate change conference will take place from October 31 – November 12 in Glasgow, Scotland.
