In late September 2022, I will be launching the publication of my new book, The Trump Files. It was written over the past six years and was completed recently.  It will be available on Amazon, Barnes and Noble and many other platforms and books stores.

A Bit of Background

For forty years I was a high school science teacher, professor of science education, Georgia State University, and co-director of the Global Thinking Project (GTP), a global environmental science project which started in the 1980s. The GTP brought together professors, researchers, teachers and teenagers initially from the United States and the Soviet Union (later, Russia), Australia, Czech Republic, Spain and other countries at a later time. I spent the last 20 years of my university career working with colleagues in these countries developing personal and professional relationships, not only with individuals, but a network of schools in the project.

In 2003, I retired from GSU as Emeritus Professor, and continued my work as a science educator by writing several books, and starting a blog at the Art of Teaching Science. I also joined my wife in her antiques business of purchasing fine English antiques in the UK and then selling them at antique shows up and down the East coast and west to Texas. We traveled to the UK more than 50 times during this period.

In 2005, my blogging began in earnest and I wrote not only about science education, but about the interface of science, public education and politics during the George W. Bush and Barack Obama presidencies.

Then along came Donald J. Trump.

He is the only United States President to direct political violence against his own government. People were killed on this day, and a number of police officers committed suicide later. The Select Committee to Investigate the January 6th Attack on the United States Capitol has presented irrefutable evidence and shocking oral reports that Trump and his highly schooled sycophants conspired to try and stop the certification of Joe Biden as the 46th President. Even in the face of malfeasance, fraud and inciting violence, Donald J. Trump is still at large.

It seemed that I was ready at the right time with the right tools to blog about Trump’s scandalous charade and shocking history of his presidency. For six years, I blogged about Trump and his administration. The blog posts were my attempt to be a “witnessing professional” using my background in science and science education, citizen diplomacy, research, global perspective and deep concern about the state of our democracy.

A decade ago, I turned some of my blog posts into a series of science education-related eBooks which I published on Amazon. Now, near the end of Trump’s presidency I had written nearly one-hundred blog posts. The daily reports of Trump’s abnormal behavior led to nightly tantrums. Finally, my wife, Mary-Alice, said that I needed to write a book.

I didn’t intend to write a book about Trump, but my years of blogging provided me with a foundation for a book about Trump’s effect on American democracy, human rights, science and public health.

It should also be noted that I decided to independently publish this book rather than seek a publisher as I had done for my previous books. In fact, I created my own publishing company, Northington-Hearn Publishing LLC. One does not, however, write or publish a book alone. Many people have helped me with this project. Kip Ault suggested that I contact Indigo Editing, a company in Portland, Oregon who provide publication services for independent authors.

Kristen Hall-Geisler did the original professional critique (Reader’s Response) of the manuscript starting on July 5, 2021. She then followed this after a major revision by the author, with in-depth editing (Developmental Editing), and line editing. Sarah Currin and Bailey Potter did a final proofreading to create the final manuscript. The manuscript was now ready for design. Jenny Kimura designed the cover and interior of the book. At the end of the design process, Kento Ikeda indexed the book. Finally, the completed book was put into the hands of Vinnie Kensella, a designer, who completed the digital conversions making the book available on all ebook formats. The book will be uploaded to Amazon KDP, and IngramSpark by Vinnie near the end of July 2022. The team of professionals that worked on the first book that will be published by Northington-Hearn can be contacted via the links I’ve provided for each of them.

Book Cover

In twenty-first century United States of America, a corrupt businessman is elected president, is impeached twice while in office, directs a failed coup d état and an attack on Congress, but still remains at-large. He’s thinking about running again.

Jack Hassard, internationally known science educator, researcher and author, examines the interplay of politics and science to unravel the effects that Donald Trump and his administration had on American society in his new book, The Trump Files.

Using Robert Jay Lifton’s concept of “a witnessing professional,” and Charles R. Ault’s introduction of him as “Citizen Jack,” The Trump Files is Citizen Jack Hassard’s eye-opening book revealing how Donald Trump affected not only American democracy, but human rights, science, and public health.

Although not a journalist or media personality, Citizen Jack uses his researcher, blogger, professor, and citizen credentials to create a political science story about a grim period when Donald Trump was president. Jack weaves his abilities as an accomplished author and teacher of science, with citizen diplomacy, blogging, and the local politics of Georgia. He composes a history of a president and his administration who undermined the tenets of a liberal democracy, nearly overthrowing the American government with his Big Lie and attempted coup d’état.

Details of the Trump Files

The Trump Files is organized around six themes with 13 chapters of my blog posts.

PARTS OF THE TRUMP FILES

Part I: Trumpism, sets the stage with the story of how extreme polarization of American society made it possible for Trump’s “America First” policy to gain the White House. The story explores how an authoritarian president led America’s democracy into danger.

Part II: Rights, is a story of immigration violence, equity, and voting rights. I show how the Republican Party is suppressing the rights of Americans to have free and fair elections, the cornerstones of liberal democracy.

Part III: Scrutiny, is a story of Donald Trump’s chronic violation of his oath of office. He was impeached twice, and he led a campaign to obstruct the Mueller investigation of Russian interference in the 2016 election. This is a story of corruption as seen by one citizen from Georgia

Part IV: Science, is a science educator’s story of how Trump’s administration dismantled and diminished science in all areas of government at the peril of the Earth’s air, water, land, climate, and—most importantly—citizens. The scientific and medical research communities were undermined not only by Donald Trump but also by hundreds of his appointees, including cabinet members carrying out orders to create disorder in the scientific community.

Part V: COVID-19, is the tragedy of Donald Trump’s failure as a leader during the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic and the impact on millions of Americans, including more than 700,000 American deaths in the first year and a half of the pandemic. The story explains how viruses come about, how they can be mitigated, and what happens if people are not told the truth about infectious diseases.

Part VI: Departure, is the final chapter of Trump’s presidency. It describes how Trump promoted the “Big Lie Conspiracy” that the 2020 election was stolen from him, even though he lost the electoral college vote 306–232 and the popular vote by 7 million. It’s a story of how Trump instigated political violence by sending right-wing mobs to seditiously attack the nation’s Capitol, which led to his second impeachment for causing an insurrection. He departed on January 20, 2021.

An Existential Threat

An Existential Threat

The Trump Files, by Jack Hassard, presents Donald Trump as an existential threat to not only the US but the entire world. It details his efforts to push an authoritarian state, his disrespect towards American allies, and detrimental impact on various areas like democracy, human rights, science, and public health. The author fears Trump’s potential return in 2024 and warns of the grave implications. However, the author upholds faith in the democratic process and underscores the power of voting in preventing a downside for the American society.

Not So Special Grand Jury’s Partial Final Report

Not So Special Grand Jury’s Partial Final Report

Judge Robert C.I. McBurney, Superior Court of Fulton County, released a portion of Fulton County Special Purpose Grand Jury. I’ve been looking forward to this report for nearly a year.

The Special Purpose Grand Jury was empaneled on January 24, 2022, more than a year after former President Trump called the Georgia Secretary of State, Brad Raffensperger. Trump made the Call to pressure the secretary to not only recount the election votes, but to find 11,700 votes.
