Trump’s Dangerous Concession to Putin

Donald Trump proposed a “peace plan” that essentially requires Ukraine to relinquish Crimea and abandon its NATO aspirations. This stance is viewed as a capitulation to Russian President Vladimir Putin, undermining Ukraine’s sovereignty and European security. Normalizing Crimea’s annexation is seen as condoning aggression, while blocking Ukraine’s NATO ambitions denies its right to self-determination. European leaders are urged to reject any deal that supports Russian expansionism. They should provide comprehensive support to Ukraine. True peace cannot be accomplished by appeasing the aggressor.

Donald Trump’s suggestion is not a peace plan. He wants President Zelenskyy to “give up Crimea” and promise Ukraine will never join NATO. It is a surrender to Vladimir Putin. Such a position betrays Ukraine, undermines European security, and rewards aggression.

Crimea was illegally annexed in 2014. To normalize that annexation is to condone land grabs by force. To block Ukraine’s NATO aspirations is to deny a sovereign nation its right to self-determination. These are core principles of the international order, not bargaining chips in Trump’s personal power play.

Europe’s leaders, who are now accompanying Zelenskyy, must hold firm. They should reject any “deal” that legitimizes Russian expansionism. Instead, they must stand shoulder-to-shoulder with Ukraine—providing security guarantees, financial aid, and diplomatic backing.

Peace cannot come through rewarding the invader and weakening the victim. If Trump is unwilling to stand up to Putin, Europe must ensure that Zelenskyy does not stand alone.
