When Alfred Bragg, the district attorney for the Manhattan District, filed charges against Donald Trump for election interference in the Stormy Daniels “hush money,” case, the pundits said this case was a dead on arrival. There was no way that Trump would be found guilty. They said this was the weakest of Trump’s four criminal trials.
Today, Donald Trump was found guilty of 34 felony charges. He is now a convicted felon. A unanimous decision against a former president of the USA. Go USA. I was not surprised. As Alfred Bragg said, “the jury’s voice is the only one that matters.”
In 2022, I published The Trump Files: The Effect of Trump’s Administration on American Democracy, Human Rights, Science and Public Health. In the book’s last section, Epilogue, I wrote about areas of concern that emerged from writing The Trump Files. I said that if we want the country to move forward as a democracy, we must be relentless and deliberate in dealing with these circumstances. We are obligated to do so.
Here are the areas that I identified as crucial to sustain democracy.
- The Big Lie
- Safeguarding American Democracy
- Charges against Trump for an attempted coup.
- Lawsuits against Trumps
The Trials of Donald Trump
These are the trials that Donald Trump is facing this year. He’s been accused of committing crimes in a series of civil and criminal cases that he refers to as “witch hunts.” It is well known that Trump often uses the phrase “witch hunt” to condemn the cases, but especially the prosecutors and judges. The problem is that for these cases to get to a trial, the prosecutors have to go through a grand jury approval process.
The highlighted cases found Donald Trump guilty. The other cases are being held up.
- The Hush Money Case-guilty
- Civil Financial Fraud Case-guilty
- Sexual Assault & Rape Case, Carroll v. Trump-guilty
- Classified Documents Case-judge in S. Florida is holding up the case.
- January 6 Conspiracy to Defraud the U.S. Case-Supreme Court stands in the way.
- Fulton County (GA) Election Interference Case– The judge is dealing with Trump appeals to remove the DA from the court. Not going to happen.
New York Hush Money & Election Interference Case
New York civil investigation is running alongside a separate criminal investigation led by Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg. On July 1, 2021, the Trump Organization’s financial chief pleaded not guilty to a sweeping tax fraud. Although Trump was not charged, he was the head of the organization charged with tax fraud. But later Bragg indicted Trump with 34 felony charges in a crime falsifying business records and conspiring to interfere in the 2016 presidential election.
Sexual Assault Charges
Trump also faces several lawsuits brought on by women who have accused Trump of defamation based on sexual assault charges. Author and journalist E. Jean Carroll filed a defamation lawsuit against Trump after he denied her accusation that he raped her in a Manhattan department store in the mid-1990s. Trump accused her of lying to sell her new book.
Racketeering: The Georgia Election Interference Case
From The Trump Files, I wrote that “As a Georgia citizen, I was incensed by Trump’s attempt to change the will of the voters in the 2020 election. Fulton County district attorney in Georgia’s largest county, Fani Willis, has opened a case against Donald Trump and others associated with Trump. The district attorney is looking into Trump’s call to Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger, in which Trump urged him to “find” votes.
According to a letter to several Georgia officials, Willis requested that the officials preserve documents related to “an investigation into attempts to influence” the state’s 2020 presidential election. Willis said that the DA’s office would look at the solicitation of election fraud, making false statements to state and local government bodies, conspiracy, racketeering, violation of oath of office, and any involvement in violence or threats related to the election’s administration. Willis has called a special grand jury to further the Trump investigation.
Summary
There have been three of six cases brought to court against Donald Trump. In each of these cases, Trump has been found liable in two of the cases. He was found liable for sexual assault and rape in the Carroll v. Trump case. He’s been ordered to pay Ms. Carroll $88.5 million. In the second civil case, defrauding the people of New York for financial fraud, he and others have been ordered to pay the state approximately $500 million.
In the New York “Hush Money” case, Trump was found criminally guilty of 34 felonies. A jury of his peers, made of 7 men and five women from New York City, convicted Trump. He is now a felon and will be bound by the laws of New York. Trump will not be able to vote because Florida does not allow felons to vote. He will also have to report to a parol officer in New York. and be bound by the rules against felons.
