Georgia World News: Trump, Voting Loss of Rights, HB 888, & Guns

There is so much to keep up with here in Georgia.  I don’t know where to start.

Fulton County DA Fani Willis has requested the formation of a special grand jury to investigate Donald Trump’s interference in the presidential election in Georgia. He called the Secretary of State to ask for 11,780 favors.  She’s indicated that most of the people she’s contacted have refused to cooperate with the investigation.  Even Brad Raffensperger is playing hard ball, and said on TV if she want to interview me, there is a process for that. I’ve been waiting for this to happen. The DA is lining up all of her ducks before she charges Trump with potential racketeering and election interference crimes.

Voting (Loss of) Rights

Then there is the Georgia Republican voting (loss of rights) bill that passed in March, and now we are beginning to see effects around the state. One example.  Most of the counties (there are 161 of them) are what we might call rural.  The new law reduced the number of drop boxes to about 78, which means some counties might not have one.  In one case I learned that in Lincoln County (near the SC border), officials have collapsed the six precincts in the county down to one….in the county seat.  Thirty-two percent of the voters are black, and a good number of the people who live in the county are poor (white and black).  People who only had to drive 10 minutes to vote, now have at least a 1/2 hour drive.  And the bill passed by the legislature makes it harder to vote by mail.  This is just one county and the effects are obviously slanted against minority voters. Voting rights are on trial in Georgia and the rest of the country. The Republicans continue to suppress the right to vote, and are making it much harder for people to vote.

Banning Critical Race Theory in Schools and Workplaces

And then there is HB 888 that just got started in the House that will outlaw any mention of Critical Race Theory.  It’s a 20 page bill that very few people will read and is a clear example of the strong “anti-black” movement, not only here but around the country. The bill ban thinking in schools.  The Georgia democrats, led by Stacey Abrams, (who is running for governor in 2022) brought a lot of people who never voted to the ballot box, and now the Republicans are working their asses off to make it harder for them to get to the polling places, to cast mail in votes, and even have done cruel things such as not allowing food or water to be give if you have to stand in a long line.

Kemp and Guns

One other thing, the Governor has announced his budget of about 30.2 billion, and has gone on a spending spree giving money to all everyone and ever pet project. Yes, he’s running for a second term and is being challenged by loser & former senator David Perdue (Jon Ossoff beat him last year).  The race between Kemp and Perdue is already nasty.  Kemp is going to Las Vegas for the one of largest gun shows this year, and will give a key note speech and attend meeting on stage with 7 or 8 Republican governors who think everyone should be allowed to carry a fire arm. Kemp has proposed a bill that will enable anyone to carry a gun (permit free).  Oh, and here’s a picture showing one of his ads in the last election in which he sat with a boy who was supposedly looking to date one of his daughters. Kemp was having a little chat with the kid holding a shot gun pointed in the boy’s direction. He pulled this add off during the Republican primary, and it gave him the upper hand. One other note, a recent article in the Atlanta Journal article said that Georgia has “quietly” become of the country’s top 10 states for gun manufacturing.

Explore the final chapter of Trump’s political saga and the rise of Kamala Harris. Trump’s end came when he supported the insurrection on January 6, 2021. His record as president was dismal, and my book The Trump Files: An Account of the Trump Administration’s Effect on American Democracy, Human Rights, Science, and Public Health describes it in detail.

One reviewer said that The Trump Files’ accounting is wide-ranging, sharp-elbowed, and deeply committed to democracy and equality. With sharp, clear-eyed prose he takes on racial injustice, the Trumpist worldview (in a discussion inspired by the work of George Lakoff), how “the United States drifted toward authoritarian and autocratic rule,” and most thoroughly how “science in the Trump era was diminished at the peril of the health and well-being for not only people and other living things, but Earth itself.”
