Donald Trump Impeached for High Crimes and Misdemeanors

Donald John Trump, President of the United States, will be impeached for high crimes and misdemeanors. This statement is from the Report of the Committee on the Judiciary House of Representative released to the public on December 13, 2019.

The report is long. However, it is well worth your time, either reading it, or skimming through the 658 pages. You can read it online. I recommend a combination of reading and skimming. That’s what I did to put this blog post together.

It is a stunning rebuke to the President of the United States. For example, the report concludes with these statements:

It would be hard to imagine a stronger or more complete case of obstruction than that demonstrated by the President since the inquiry began. In the history of our Republic, no President has obstructed Congress like President Trump.

Report of the Committee on the Judiciary House of Representatives, December 13, 2019, p. 181.

Treason, Bribery or other high Crimes and Misdemeanors

Republicans are quick to point out that the Democrats didn’t charged Trump with treason or bribery. However, the Republicans ignored the last section, “or other high crimes and misdemeanors.

It turns out that the Framers said that a president can be impeached for high crimes and misdemeanors to include three forms of Presidential misbehavior.

  • (1) abuse of power,
  • (2) betrayal of the national interest through foreign entanglements, and
  • (3) corruption of office and elections.

Any one of these misbehaviors is sufficient for impeachment and removal from office. In Trump’s case, all three were combined to establish a powerful case to remove him from office.

The Articles of Impeachment

The Abuse of Power

The abuse of power is impeachment charge number 1. It is discussed in detail in third part of the report.

Trump abused his power of the presidency by asking a foreign government’s president to investigate his political rival, V.P. Joe Biden, as well as investigate the bogus theory that it was Ukraine not Russia that interfered in the 2016 election.

If Ukraine’s President Zelensky agreed to this, then Trump would release nearly $400 million in security assistance which already approved by a bi-partisan panel of Congress. Trump continues to claim he did nothing wrong in his phone call with President Zelensky.

The elected Representatives in Congress don’t agree with him.

Obstruction of Congress

No one has obstructed Congress like Donald Trump. He has prevented more people from testifying in Congress’s impeachment proceedings than any President in U.S. history. The obstruction of Congress is described in the fourth part of the report.

Trump directed the White House and other agencies in government not to cooperate with the House’s Impeachment proceedings. He threatened to muzzle witnesses, and cause harm to their careers if they dared speak to the Congress.

Fortunately, some members of the National Security Council, the Department of State, and, the Department of Defense choose to ignore Trump’s illegal orders. They came forward and testified.

Impeachment Day

December 18, 2019 is a day in which only the 3rd President of the United States was impeached. On the 18th, more than 200 members of Congress will vote for the impeachment of Donald J. Trump. It’s not a day to celebrate. It is a day to reflect upon what has happened to the United States over the past three years.

I am still amazed that people support Donald Trump. How can they possibly support a man who had lied to the American people repeatedly? Some claim he’s lied more than 15,000 times in three years.

Perhaps impeachment will get people to think about our President in a different light.

I am not confident that anything will happen other than a lot of very loud voices. If anything good comes out of this, it has to be the quiet talk that might take place among people locally. Perhaps, if they see Donald Trump’s name on a ballot for President they will think twice, and make a choice that will prevent another impeachment.

I wrote over a year ago that Trump needs to exit the White House. I am even more convinced that some one as corrupt as he is, should not be President of the United States. He will be impeached for high crimes and misdemeanors.

Stephen Miller: A Trump Pick You May Not Know About

Donald Trump has started selecting people to be part of his administration. The first batch included Tulsi Gabbard, Pete Hegseth, Matt Gaetz, and Robert Kennedy. Some folks consider them deplorable.

Yet, one of the first picks was Stephen Miller. Do you know who he is?  Or what position he’ll have in the Trump administration?  He won’t hold a cabinet spot. But he will have an office in the White House. He’ll keep his position from 2017 to 2021 as deputy chief of staff for policy.

Miller has been and will continue as one of Trump’s most influential advisors. He’s been in Trump’s orbit for nearly a decade. Miller crafted Trump’s rally speeches and designed immigration policies that banned Muslims and separated families. He will be at the center of the threat to deport millions of undocumented immigrants. The danger to American immigrant families is real. Trump is determined to carry out his threat. Stephen Miller will lead this dehumanizing and cruel assault on people.  Indeed, people like most of us. We are all descendants of immigrants who came to America for a better life. Miller is a descendant of a Jewish family that escaped from Russia in 1903.

The Last Days of Trump

Explore the final chapter of Trump’s political saga and the rise of Kamala Harris. Trump’s end came when he supported the insurrection on January 6, 2021. His record as president was dismal, and my book The Trump Files: An Account of the Trump Administration’s Effect on American Democracy, Human Rights, Science, and Public Health describes it in detail.

One reviewer said that The Trump Files’ accounting is wide-ranging, sharp-elbowed, and deeply committed to democracy and equality. With sharp, clear-eyed prose he takes on racial injustice, the Trumpist worldview (in a discussion inspired by the work of George Lakoff), how “the United States drifted toward authoritarian and autocratic rule,” and most thoroughly how “science in the Trump era was diminished at the peril of the health and well-being for not only people and other living things, but Earth itself.”
