Donald Trump has caused a violent protest that has resulted in the storming of the U.S. Capitol. Hundreds of people storming the building have driven members of Congress and the Vice-President to be evacuated from the Capitol. The protestors, encouraged by Trump, have taken over the capitol. It’s dangerous. And looking at the scene, not only is it dangerous, but I was shocked to see how unprepared law enforcement was to deal this Trump protest and rally. Thousands of people have surrounded the U.S. Capitol, and many have broken into the building and reached the Senate chamber.
This is a day that central to the American democracy. It’s the day when the Vice-President oversees the opening of Elector College. Envelopes from each state are opened and the results of the presidential election are read aloud. It’s legal for legislators to object to any list of electors from any state. Republican members of congress, more than 100 in the House, and 13 in the Senate have called for
At this time, protestors are breaking through windows and entering the capitol. Police and protestors are engaged in violent actions around the buildings. One woman was shot in the chest on the grounds of the capitol. She’s in critical condition.
Inside the building guns have been drawn. One people have entered the senate chamber, and one person was sitting at the speakers desk. Even though protestors have been cleared from the Senate floor, and moved to the rotunda, this violence is unprecedented .
Viewing this is not only frightening but it raises to a new level the dangerousness of Donald Trump.
A commentator makes an important point. Last summer, during a Black Lives Matter protest, law enforcement by the thousands were present. Today, when the authorities knew that there would be a protest of right-wing protesters called into action by Donald Trump, there was little to no police presence. During the Black Lives Matter protest, most of the demonstrators were Black, while today, the protestors are white.
One conclusion that I see here is that racial injustice is front and center here. The ignorance shown by the police knowing that at least six right-wing hate groups were organizing their troops, is appalling.
Here are some photos of the day.
